This is a painting of George Berkeley Introduction
George Berkeley was an odd philosopher. He believed that matter did not exist and that God was the source of everything. This may have come from his time as the bishop of Cycone. He was a good thinker and writer and believed that the mind was an active being. However it was not, in his mind, a living being, for matter did not exist. This is why many philosophers and people of that time considered him odd in his philospohies. George Berkeley was influenced by Isaac Newton and John Locke. German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer called Berkeley "the father of idealism." However, most people considered Berkeley to be an empiricist.
